Certainly the particular and delightful position of Bellagio on the shores of Lake Como has created the premises for the diffusion of rowing as a sport discipline. This sport is practiced all the year round in the club of the historic Unione Sportiva Bellagina, founded in 1908 and situated in the suburb of San Giovanni near the little harbour. However the series of successes put together by the rowing team of Bellagio presupposes that there is something more behind it all - more than a simple matter of chance or of tradition. Here the young men and women train who reach the maximum absolute level of competence: it is enough to note that the Bellagio athletes have won 9 world championships in various teams and categories in the period 1986-2002.
At the present moment three athletes are part of the national team: Franco Sancassani, Daniele Gilardoni and Elisabetta Sancassani.Elisabetta is a member of the female double, which is getting ready for the Olympic Games in Athens to be held in 2004, and her sporting curriculum is brief but already very interesting. Born in Lecco on 6th February 1983 she started to row in 1995 and took part in the national team "juniores" in 2001 and has won the National Title in singles and classified third in the Worlsd Championship for doubles. In 2002 at only 19 years old she was placed in the doubles crew with Gabriella Bascelli, and won the Italian and World Title under 23 and conquered the first bronze medal of the history of Italian rowing in an Absolute Female World Championship. With these past records it is not a dream that Elisabetta could take to Athens the name of Bellagio together with her smile and her attractive personality |
